Why Crofting Communities?
Crofting communities maintain distinctive food traditions shaped by local landscapes, seasonal rhythms, and intergenerational knowledge. These practices may preserve dietary patterns that support microbial diversity — patterns that are increasingly rare in modern food environments.
By working collaboratively with crofters and crofting organisations, we hope to understand:
• How traditional diets influence the microbiome
• How cultural food practices are passed down
• Whether “lost” microbiota species may be inherited or preserved through traditional lifestyles
